Cream of Cumbria's slogan is "You can whip our cream, but you can't beat our butter' and some of the top names in the world of food would agree wholeheartedly. Celebrity chef Rick Stein’s book, Food Heroes Of Britain even speaks of the incredible taste and texture of this unique butter. “I get a thrill of certainty every time I buy produce from one of my food heroes and realise that it does taste better. The butter produced by Cream of Cumbria has a sweet creaminess that makes spreading it on some crusty bread a special occasion.”
Praise for the skill and commitment that goes into this product is, we feel, well deserved for a family that has been churning milk for at least 80 years. The secret to its rich taste is 100% double cream from local herds and our two-lady team can 'churn' out 400-500 packs of hand shaped and stamped butter each week. Our butter has no additives, so has a shelf life of 14 days. Our cream comes in on Tuesday and Wednesday and the butter goes out on Thursday. You can't get fresher!
It was a chance remark by a cookery demonstrator about a desperate need for a butter producer in Cumbria, that made Sue Forrester decide to become that person. Pasteurised cream from a local dairy herd is just the start to this age old process. The butter is churned and shaped individually using "scotch hands" and the butter marks are the same as those used by Sue's grandparents over 80 years ago. Sue & Tom aims to produce top quality butter incorporating old skills and with full traceability. They also uses the butter and buttermilk in scones, tea breads, rich fruit cakes, biscuits and traditional Cumberland rum and brandy butters. |
